If you have never gambled before — either at home or on the internet — simply observe at first. Only join in if you think there is a table whose experience matches your own. This post was sponsored by Dixon Etiquette.

  1. Check what the table minimum and maximum bets are.
  2. Look smart — a shirt, tie, and jacket should be de rigeur.
  3. British and European casinos may require that you become a member to be a let gamble there; bring ID with you on your first visit. (For my American friends, ID is not a requirement to carry with you in most countries.)
  4. Dealers will neither engage in in-depth conversation nor will they shake your hand (in case chips are being exchanged). They may accept tips.
  5. Keep your voice low in general despite winning or losing. Speak clearly enough to communicate with the dealer [and table] but not loud enough that others hear you on the other side of the room.
  6. Dealers will alert the management if your behavior is out of line.
  7. Be exceptionally kind to the wait staff, and do not forget to give them eye contact saying ‘thank you’ even when no refreshments are necessary.
  8. Let the dealer go about their business. Do not get in their way or try to help them. They know what they are doing. Or should.
  9. Make sure your cards stay in view (the backs, not the face).
  10. Phones, cameras, and other digital devices are banned at the table.
  11. Never, ever touch another player’s chips. You would not like them putting their hand in your wallet.
  12. Never touch any card dealt face up; only handle cards that are dealt face down.
  13. Be a good winner and a good loser. No gloating or crying.
  14. Feel free to congratulate the winner if it feels appropriate. This could simply be a smile or silent nod.

Here is a guide on how to elegantly lose everything at the table.

Walk it off. You will be just fine.
